公元79年8月24日，VESUVIUS火山爆发，火山灰淹没了庞培。火山爆发时庞培大约有两万人居民。对庞培的末日最可信和最详细的记录来自罗马学者小普林尼。在一封给罗马历史学家塔西佗的信中，他写下了他的所见所闻：一朵形状象松树似的黑云出现在火山口，过了一段时间，这朵黑云沿着山坡滚下来，将周围的一切都覆盖了，包括附近的海面。
小普林尼看到的黑云是火山喷发出来的炽热的气体、灰尘和石块。普林尼报道说，在火山喷发时，地面不断地颤动，后来地震非常强烈。他写到，灰尘如同厚厚的板块一样落下来，他所在的村庄必须被撤离。海面突然退回去了，然后又被一阵地震逼了回来。今天的地质学家将最后的这个现象称为海啸。他还说，太阳被灰尘遮掩，白天如同黑夜。
他的叔叔，一位同样著名的罗马学者，老普林尼，在指挥一支舰队救援难民时殉难。他是被地面的二氧化碳窒息死的。
庞培被掩盖在六米多深的火山灰下。它的名字和位置被人遗忘了。1599年，一个建筑师在挖河的时候发现了庞培的遗迹，但一直到150多年后，人们才真正开始挖掘这座古城。
