"Pleonasms":  A
pleonasm consists of two concepts (usually words) that are
redundant. Some pleonastic
expressions are alsoknown as tautologies which
means needless repetition of an idea in a different word, phrase,
or sentence. Pleonasm sometimesserves the same function
as rhetorical repetition. It reinforces a point, and makes the
writing clearer and easier to understand. Some pleonastic phrases are used
in professional or scholarly writing as well as in stylistic
writings. On theother hand, as is the case with any
literary or rhetorical effect, excessive use of
pleonasm can weaken writing or
speech. Given below are examples of a
few pleonasms: - advance
forward

- advance warning

- ascend up

- completely full

- empty hole

 word/phrase "Lose one's
shirt": Lose a lot of
money. E.g. "I happened to bump into Dan at lunch yesterday
afternoon. For one thing, he told me he lost his
shirt at the races." commonly confused "Instances,
Incidents": Incidents is merely the
plural of incident, meaning occurrences. Instances
are examples. Incidents can be used as instances only if
someone is using them as
examples. E.g. "Police reported
damage to three different outhouses in separate
incidents last
Halloween." E.g. "Semicolons are not
required in the first three instances given in
your
query." do you
know? i About Mother's day in United
States: Mother's Day is
celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the
hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries
including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mother's Day on
the second Sunday of May. Anna Jarvis is recognised as the
Founder of Mother's Day in US. Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of
celebrating Mother's Day from her own mother Mrs Anna Marie Reeves
Jarvis in her childhood. An activist and social worker, Mrs Jarvis
used to express her desire that someday someone must honor all
mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made
by them. A loving daughter, Anna never forgot her mother's word and
when her mother died in 1905, she resolved to fulfill
her desire of having a mother's day. To begin with, Anna sent
Carnations(her mother's favorite flowers) in the church service in
Grafton, West Virginia to honor her mother. Later
Anna, along with her supporters, wrote letters to people in
positions of power lobbying for the official declaration of
Mother's Day holiday. The hard work paid off. By 1911, Mother's Day
was celebrated in almost every state in the Union and on May 8,
1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating
the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
