龜山島一名龜山嶼，位於宜蘭東方約十公里之海域，為孤懸於海中之火山島嶼，外貌酷似浮龜而得名，屬宜蘭縣頭城鎮所轄。由大里向東南看，其形最似烏龜，首朝東北，尾向西南，全島東西長三．三公里，南北長一．七公里，面積只有二‧八五平方公里，海岸線長約十公里。

龜山島因外形酷似烏龜而得名。主要由兩座火山體組成龜頭和龜甲，龜尾部位是一片細長的砂洲，隨著潮水漲落，就像是烏龜擺尾。

數萬年前曾火山噴發，島上留有硫氣孔和溫泉。此外，距龜山島西南約四公里，還有一個更小的「龜卵嶼」。

在民間傳說中，龜山島是隻大母龜，在明朝鄭成功率軍到台灣時，大母龜攻擊鄭成功，於是鄭成功一箭將牠射傷。母龜在產下卵後化成龜山島，硫氣孔便是當年被射中的傷口。

另一則傳說，是龍王宮裡的龜將軍與龍王公主私下戀愛，造成龍王不悅，因而將龜將軍變成島，公主則被化為風光旖旎的蘭陽平原，永遠只能隔海遙遙相望。而這段淒美的故事，在地理師眼中，則是風水上「龜蛇守海口」的大好形勢：龜山島和蘭陽平原沿岸連綿不斷的砂丘（蛇）正好維繫了蘭湯平原的地氣，使得蘭陽豐衣足食。</B>
