Activists Prepare Tiananmen Square Massacre Commemoration

TaipeiChinese pro-democracy activists announced on Oct. 1 that a series of activists are planning and organizing in major metropolitan areas in the world the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which happened June 4, 1989.

Pro-democracy activists such as Wang Dan were participants and victims of the political persecution. On the eve of the twentieth anniversary of the bloody crackdown on the 1989 democratic movement, they are preparing to unite many in commemoration of the massacre and the loss of justice in China. They wish to continue pursuing what they originally proposed 20 years ago but have not yet realized: democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and equality in China.

They made indications that next year there will be a collaborative effort to investigate and publish the truth which was deliberately covered by the people in power. They also wish to pursue justice that was brutally abolished by the government and appeal to Chinese citizens around the world to promote political reform, media freedom and a constitutional democratic system in China so as to make China a safe harbor for all Chinese people.

A series of activities will be hosted in China as well as in major cities around the world. Victims are to gather in Hong Kong and Washington D.C., establishing the Tiananmen Inmates Connection which resembles the “Tiananmen Mothers,” which is a joint effort to fight for a universal declaration of rights in China.

They also will organize both domestic and international scholars in constitutional affairs to analyze the nature of the massacre and initiate a signature campaign with an open letter to Chinese authorities. They also wish to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the massacre and collect signatures from international communities to make a request to the United Nations to commemorate the massacre and to demand the Chinese government to comply with the UN Charter and international human rights conventions.
