易經•彖傳

咸,感也。柔上而剛下,二氣感應以相與,止而說,男下女,是以亨利貞,取女吉也。天地感而萬物化生,聖人感人心而天下和平,觀其所感,而天地萬物之情可見矣。


Tuan Zhuan:Xian
        
Xian is here used in the sense of Kan, meaning (mutually) influencing. The weak (trigram) above, and the strong one below; their two influences moving and responding to each other, and thereby forming a union; the repression (of the one) and the satisfaction (of the other); (with their relative position), where the male is placed below the female: - all these things convey the notion of 'a free and successful course (on the fulfilment of the conditions), while the advantage will depend on being firm and correct, as in marrying a young lady, and there will be good fortune.' Heaven and earth exert their influences, and there ensue the transformation and production of all things. The sages influence the minds of men, and the result is harmony and peace all under the sky. If we look at (the method and issues) of those influences, the true character of heaven and earth and of all things can be seen.

The weakly (trigram) on top, besides the strong existed at bottom; their two jointly affects moving, responding to each other, and next forming a union]; the repression (of the one) and the satisfaction (of the other); (with their relative position), where the male is placed below the female: - all these things convey the notion of 'a free and successful course (on the fulfilment of the conditions), while the advantage will depend on being firm and correct, as in marrying a young lady, and there will be good fortune[the inhibition (of a single one) and the joy, satisfaction (of the other); (by their relative bearings), where the male is existed at bottom, the female on top just at the same time: - these things all express the notion of 'a comfortable in addition gainful way (regarding the obtaining of the conditions), while the advantage will depend on being exactly firm and correct, just as in marrying a fresh-looking girl, and there will be exceptional fortune].' Heaven and earth exert their influences, and there ensue the transformation and production of all things[Heaven and earth bring into play their influences, and there bring into existence the mass production in conjunction with transformation of every single thing]. The sages influence the minds of men, and the result is harmony and peace all under the sky. If we look at (the method and issues) of those influences, the true character of heaven and earth and of all things can be seen[The sages excellently influence the brains of human beings, and the result is harmony in addition lack of disturbance every single one under the sky. If we examine at (the method and issues) of those influences, the true character of heaven and earth and of just all matters can be seen].
