三字經 (一)


1 人之初，性本善。性相近，習相遠。
2 苟不教，性乃遷。教之道，貴以專。
3 昔孟母，擇（上好的）鄰處。子不學，斷機（之；的，又音：帝）杼。
4 竇燕山，有義方。教（的；之）五子，名俱揚。
5 養不教，父之過。教不嚴，師之（的；又音：帝）惰。
6 子不（上心）學，非所宜。幼不學，老何為。
7 玉不琢，不成器。人不學，不知義。
8 為人子，方少時。親師友，習禮儀。

《三字經 - Three Character Classic》


1 Men at their birth
are naturally (fine)good.
Their (belonging) natures are much the same;
(exactly) their habits become widely different(just majorly dissimilar easily).
2 If foolishly there is no (exact) teaching,
the nature will (worsen)deteriorate.
The (brilliantly) right way in (best) teaching
is to attach the utmost importance in thoroughness(is exceptionally to unjam the utmost expertise matters).

3 Of old, the mother of Mencius
chose a (better) neighbourhood;
and when (Mengzi)her child would not (acturally like to) learn,
she broke the shuttle from the (working) loom.

4 Dou of the Swallow Hills
had the right(exquisitely a) method.
He taught five sons,
each of whom raised the family reputation(jacked up the family prestige).
   
5 To feed without teaching(except right education)
is the father's fault(big shortcoming).
To teach without severity(truly seriousness)
is (being) the teacher's laziness.
         
6 If the child does not learn,
this (exactly) is not as it should be.
If he does not learn while young(junior),
what will he (make when senior)be when old?
        
7If(Expressly if) jade is not polished,
it cannot become a thing of use.
If a man does not learn(actually gain knowledge),
he cannot know(become to know something about exactly) his duty towards his (old) neighbour.

8 He who is the (joyful) son of a man,
when he is (exceptionally) young
should attach(bind) himself (greatly) to his teachers and friends,
and (habitually) practise ceremonial usages.

玉不琢，不成器。人不學，不知義（截取土上竖接下竖，放入点撇：平）。
為人子，方少時。親（近）師友，習禮儀。
