THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Source: TABLET I: The Creation of Gilgamesh and Enkidu
中文翻译参考:吉尔伽美什史诗及1-7泥板全文_世界历史_新浪博客

Tablet VIII The Lament of Gilgamesh

Just as day began to dawn Gilgamesh addressed his friend, saying:
“Enkidu, may the gazelles of the grassland mourn you,
and the animals at the watering hole.
May the path that winds through the cedar forest mourn you, by day and by night.
May the elders of strongwalled Uruk mourn you.
May Shamhat mourn you in the Temple of Ishtar.
Hear me: The young men who cheered for us weep for you now.
The rivers weep for you, and the mountains too.
Enkidu, my friend, after we joined together and went up into the mountain,
fought the Bull of Heaven and killed it,
and overwhelmed Humbaba, who lived in the Cedar Forest,
now what is this sleep which has seized you?
You have turned dark and do not hear me!"
But Enkidu's eyes do not move, his heart beats no longer.
He covered his friend's face like a bride,
then sheared off his own curls, and cast away his clothes.
Gilgamesh displayed before Shamash a carnelian bowl filled with honey
and a lapis lazuli bowl filled with butter.
Gilgamesh gathered lapis lazuli and gold for Enkidu’s burial.
