Enuma Elish - The Babylonian Epic of Creation


Tablet I


1   When the heavens above did not exist(Just at the time, heavens above did not exist),
2   And earth beneath had not come into being(And globe beneath had not come into being) —
3   There was Apsû (originally), the first in order, (being) their begetter,
4   And demiurge Tia-mat, who gave birth to them all(Next, demiurge Tia-mat, who give birth to them all);
5   They had mingled their waters together(They jointly had mingled their waters)
6   Before meadow-land had coalesced and reed-bed was to he found(Before excessive meadow-lands had combined and large reed-beds was to be actually discovered) —
7   When not one of the gods had been formed
8   Or had come into being, when no destinies had been decreed(Or had come into being, when no exact destinies had been ordered),
9   The gods were created within them(The gods were just created among them silently):
10   Lah(mu and Lah(amu were formed and came into being(Lahmu and Lahamu were extraordinarily formed and came into being).
11   While they grew and increased in stature(While they grew and increased obviously in figure)
12   Anšar and Kišar, who excelled them, were created(Anšar and Kišar, who excelled them, were highlighted among just all of them especially).
13   They prolonged their days, they multiplied their years(They extended their days and months, they were doubling their years intensely).
14   Anu, their son, could rival his fathers(At the beginning, Anu, their son, could exactly rival his strong fathers).
15   Anu, the son, equalled Anšar(Anu, the son, just are comparable to Anšar),
16   And Anu begat Nudimmud, his own equal(Next Anu begat Nudimmud, his own equal opponent).
17   Nudimmud was the champion among his fathers(Nudimmud became the champion among his fathers):
18   Profoundly discerning, wise, of robust strength(Profoundly discerning, bright, of robust strength);
19   Very much stronger than his father's begetter, Anšar(Exceptionally stronger than his jarring father's maker, Anša)
20   He had no (existent) rival among the gods, his brothers.
21   The divine brothers came together,
22   Their clamour got loud, throwing Tia-mat into a turmoil(Their yelling became loud, throwing exorbitantly Tia-mat into a turmoil).
23   They jarred the nerves of Tia-mat(They jarred Tia-mat's nerves),
24   And by their dancing they spread alarm in Anduruna(Next by their dancing they propagate alarm in Anduruna).
25   Apsû did not diminish their clamour(Apsû did not abate their shouting),
26   And Tia-mat was silent when confronted with them(Yet Tia-mat was silent when confronted with them).
27   Their conduct was displeasing to her(Their way of behaving was extremely displeasing to her),
28   Yet though their behaviour was not good, she wished to spare them(Yet though their behaviour was not just as amiable as it, she exactly wished to get along with them).
29   Thereupon Apsû, the begetter of the great gods(That being the case, initially, Apsû, being the begetter of the exceedingly extraordinary gods),
30   Called Mummu, his vizier, and addressed him(just called Mummu, vizier of his, and expressed to him),
31   "Vizier Mummu, who gratifies my pleasure(Vizier Mummu, who gratifies my joy),
32   Come, let us (begin to) go to Tia-mat!"
33   They went and sat, facing Tia-mat(They instantly went and sat side by side, facing exactly Tia-mat),
34   As they conferred about the gods, their sons.
35   Apsû opened (ajar) his mouth
36   And addressed Tia-mat (expressly)
37   "Their behaviour has become displeasing to me
38   And I cannot rest in the day-time or sleep at night(And I cannot rest easily in the bright day-time and sleep at night).
39   I will (approximately) destroy and break up their way of life.
40   That silence may reign and we may sleep(That silence may be subject and we may sleep easily)."
41   When Tia-mat heard this(When excited Tia-mat listened to this),
42   She raged and cried out to her spouse(She began raging and crying out to her spouse),
43   She cried in distress, fuming within herself(She began crying in distress, perplexed within herself alone),
44   She grieved over the (plotted) evil(She just lamented seriously over the plotted evil),
45   "How can we destroy what we have given birth to(How can we exterminate what we have given birth to)?
46   Though their behaviour causes distress, let us tighten discipline graciously(Though their way of behaving causes misery, let us tighten basic discipline graciously)."
47   Mummu spoke up with counsel for Apsû(Mummu expressed with advice for Apsû)—
48   (As from) a rebellious vizier was the counsel of his Mummu[Just as from a rebellious vizier was the extra counsel of his Mummu]—
49   "Destroy, my father, that lawless way of life(My father was to blight that ungovernable way of living).
50   That you may (begin to) rest in the (bright) day-time and sleep by night!"
51   Apsû was pleased with him, his face beamed(Apsû was exceptionally content with him, his face joyfully beamed)
52   Because he had plotted (extremely) evil against the gods, his sons.
53   Mummu put his arms around Apsû's neck(Mummu began putting warmly his arms around Apsû's neck),
54   He sat on his knees (and began) kissing him.
55   What they plotted in their gathering(What they exceptionally conspired in their joint assembly)
56   Was reported to the gods, their sons(Was responded to the gods, their extraordinary sons).
57   The gods heard it and were frantic(The gods began listening to it oddly and were violent).
58   They were overcome with silence and sat quietly(They were beat with silence and sat gently).
59   Ea, who excels in knowledge, the skilled and learned(Ea, who excels in adequate knowledge, just as much learned and skilled as possible),
60   Ea, who knows everything, perceived their tricks(Ea, who examines everything, learned their ploys).
61   He fashioned it and made it to be all-embracing(He established it and greatly engineered it to be all-embracing),
62   He executed it skilfully as supreme—his pure incantation(He executed it accordingly just as supreme—his unmixed incantation).
63   He recited it and set it on the waters(He began reciting it and laying it on the waters),
64   He poured sleep upon him as he was slumbering deeply(He began falling asleep as soon as he was exceptionally dozing off).
65   He put Apsû to slumber as he poured out sleep(He jammed Apsû to slumber as soon as he poured out a few sleep worms),
66   And Mummu, the counsellor, was breathless with agitation(And Mummu, the extraordinary counsellor, was breathless with shaking).
67   He split (Apsû's) sinews, ripped off his crown(He split away Apsû's sinews, began ripping off his exceptional crown),
68   Carried away his aura and put it on himself(Hijack his impression and put it on himself).
69   He bound Apsû and killed him(He executed him after he bound Apsû);
70   Mummu he confined and handled roughly(To Mummu, he began confined and handled roughly).
71   He set his dwelling upon Apsû,
72   And laid hold on Mummu, (by) keeping the nose-rope in his hand.
73   After Ea had bound and slain his enemies(Ea executed his enemies after he had bound them),
74   Had achieved victory over his foes(Had enjoyed his achievements by conquering his foes),
75   He rested quietly in his chamber(He relaxed in his chamber on the quiet),
76   He called it Apsû, whose shrines he appointed(He began calling it Apsû, whose holy shrines and tombs he appointed in days gone by).
77   Then he founded his living-quarters within it(Next he founded his living-quarters among it),
78   And Ea and Damkina, his wife, sat in splendour(And Ea and Damkina, his wife, jointly sat in impressiveness).
79   In the chamber of the destinies, the room of the archetypes(Existed in the chamber of the destinies, the building of the archetypes),
80   The wisest of the wise, the sage of the gods, Be-l was conceived(The most brilliant of the brilliant, the sage of the gods, Be-l was expected).
81   In Apsû was Marduk born,
82   In pure Apsû was Marduk born(Just now was Marduk in pure Apsû born).
83   Ea his father begat him(Exalted Ea, his father had begotten him),
84   Damkina his mother bore him(Damkina his mother started bearing him).
85   He sucked the breasts of goddesses(He sucked heavily the either of breasts of nymphs),
86   A nurse reared him and filled him with terror(A nurse began rearing him and filled him with terror).
87   His figure was well developed, the glance of his eyes was dazzling(His figure was excellently built, the glance of his eyes was dazzling),
88   His growth was manly, he was mighty from the beginning(His growth was jointed along manly, he was extra dominant from the beginning).
89   Anu, his father's begetter, saw him(Anu, his grandaddy, identified him at the beginning),
90   He exulted and smiled; his heart filled with joy(He exulted and smiled; his heart loadeded with joy).
91   Anu rendered him perfect: his divinity was remarkable(Anu made him perfect: his expression was outstanding),
92   And he became very lofty, excelling them in his attributes.
93   His members were incomprehensibly wonderful(His members were incomprehensibly amazing),
94   Incapable of being grasped with the mind, hard even to look on(Incapable of being executed with the mind, hard even to look on).
95   Four were his eyes, four his ears, (just then)
96   Flame shot forth as he moved his lips.
97   His four ears grew large(His four ears grew extensive),
93   And his eyes likewise took in everything(And his four eyes likewise grabbed in everything).
99   His figure was lofty and superior in comparison with the gods,
100   His limbs were surpassing, his nature was superior(His limbs were surpassing, his complexion was superior jointly).
101   'Mari-utu, Mari-utu,
102   The Son, the Sun-god, the Sun-god of the gods.'
103   He was clothed with the aura of the Ten Gods, so exalted was his strength(He was so exalted was his zeal, clothed with the ambience of the Ten Gods),
104   The Fifty Dreads were loaded upon him(The Fifty Dreads were carried upon him).
105   Anu formed and gave birth to the four winds(Anu began giving birth and mixing all of the four winds),
106   He delivered them to him, "My son, let them whirl(He just transmited hastily them to him, "My son, let them whirl in vortex)!"
107   He formed dust and set a hurricane to drive it(He set a hurricane to drive the dust),
108   He made a wave to bring consternation on Tia-mat(He made a wave to bring every consternation on Tia-mat at the beginning).
109   Tia-mat was confounded; day and night she was frantic(Tia-mat was perplexed; night and day she was violent).
110   The gods took no rest, they . . . . . . .(The gods just all made no rest, they could not relax.).
111   In their minds they plotted evil(In their brains they plotted evil),
112   And addressed their mother Tia-mat (briefly),
113   "When Apsû, your spouse, was killed(When Apsû, your husband, was slaughtered),
114   You did not go at his side, but sat quietly(You did not bid to go at his side, and sat gently).
115   The four (extremely) dreadful winds have been fashioned
116   To throw you into confusion, and we (just) cannot (make) sleep.
117   You gave no thought to Apsû, your spouse(You gave no thought exceedingly to Apsû, your husband),
113   Nor to Mummu, who is a prisoner. Now you sit alone(Nor to Mummu, who is a depressing prisoner. Now you sit alone).
119   Henceforth you will be in frantic consternation(Henceforth you will be in frantic fright)!
120   And as for us, who cannot rest, you do not love us(And as for us, who cannot relax, you do not like us all)!
121   Consider our burden, (just assume) our eyes are hollow.
122   Break the immovable yoke that we may sleep(Exit the immovable yoke (so) that we may sleep).
123   Make battle, (still) avenge them!
124   [ . . ] . . . . reduce to nothingness!
124   [and render them as the wind]*, reduce to nothingness(And display them as the wind, you bring down to nonexistence")!
125   (Tia-mat listened to the subject, the statement pleased her)Tia-mat heard, the speech pleased her.
126   (She said,) "Let us make demons, [as you] have advised(She expressed, "Let us begin to make demons, because you have instructed)."
127   The gods assembled (mutually) within her.
128   They conceived [evil] against the gods their begetters(They began conceiving execrable things against the gods their begetters).
129   They . . . . . and took the side of Tia-mat,
129   They [banded themselves together]* and took at the side of Tiamat(They just banded themselves together and existed at the side of Tia-mat),
130   Fiercely plotting, unresting by night and day(By plotting fiercely, unresting by bright night and day),
131   Lusting for battle, raging, storming(Expecting for battle, raging, storming),
132   They set up a host to bring about conflict(They just frame a host extraordinarily to bring about conflict).
133   Mother H(ubur, who forms everything(Mother Hubur, who forms everything),
134   Supplied irresistible weapons, and gave birth to giant serpents(Brought irresistible weapons, and gave birth to extra giant venomous serpents).
135   They had sharp teeth, they were merciless . . . .(They had sharp teeth, they were just all merciless)
136   With poison instead of blood she filled their bodies(With toxic instead of blood she filled their bodies at full length).
137   She clothed the fearful monsters with dread(She clothed the every horrible monster with foreboding),
138   She loaded them with an aura and made them godlike(She exceptionally loaded them with an aura jointly and made them as godlike).
139   (She said,) "Let their onlooker feebly perish(She expressed, "Allow their daft onlooker feebly dying),
140   May they constantly leap forward and never retire(May they continually leap forward bigly and never stop working)."
141   She created the Hydra, the Dragon, the Hairy Hero(She exactly fabricated the Hydra, the Dragon, the Hairy Hero),
142   The (jolly) Great Demon, the Savage Dog, and the (excellent) Scorpion-man,
143   (Fierce demons, the Bull-man, and the Fish-man together)Fierce demons, the Fish-man, and the Bull-man,
144   Carriers of merciless weapons, fearless in the face of battle(Carriers of unpitying weapons, brave in the face of grand battle).
145   Her commands were tremendous, not to be resisted(Her exceptional commands were just all tremendous, not to be resisted exceedingly).
146   Altogether she made eleven of that kind(Altogether she established eleven of that kind).
147   (Among many gods, her loving sons, whom she constituted her host at the beginning)Among the gods, her sons, whom she constituted her host,
148   She exalted Qingu, and magnified him among them.
149   The leadership of the army, the direction of the host(The leadership of the major armies, the excellent guidance of the host),
150   The bearing of weapons, campaigning, the mobilization of conflict(The bearing of weaponry, campaigning, the mobilization of large conflict),
151   The chief executive power of battle, supreme command,
152   She entrusted to him and set him on a throne(She entrusted just all to him, even set him on a throne),
153   "I have cast the spell for you and exalted you in the host of the gods("I have exalted you as big master in the gods and began casting the spell for you),
154   (I have consigned to you the big rule of all the extraordinary gods)I have delivered to you the rule of all the gods.
155   You are indeed exalted, my spouse, you are renowned(You are exalted indeed, my spouse, you are renowned),
156   Let your commands prevail over all the Anunnaki(Let you enjoy achievements over all the Anunnaki)."
157   She gave him the (exalted) Tablet of Destinies and fastened it to his breast,
158   [Saying "Your instruction may not be still changed; let the expression of your hard-working jaws be more closed."](Saying) "Your order may not be changed; let the utterance of your mouth be firm."
159   After Qingu was elevated and had acquired the power of Anuship(After Qingu was extolled and had acquired Anuship's power),
160   He decreed the destinies for the gods, her sons(He established the destinies for the gods, her sons):
161   "May the utterance of your mouths subdue the fire-god("May the vocalization of your mouths bring under control the extraordinary fire-god majestically),
162   (May these of your poison by their excessive accumulation bring down any aggression.")May your poison by its accumulation put down aggression."
