Dhana Sutta: Treasure
translated from the Pali by
Thanissaro Bhikkhu


"Monks, there are these seven treasures. Which seven? The treasure of conviction, the treasure of virtue, the treasure of conscience, the treasure of concern, the treasure of listening, the treasure of generosity, the treasure of discernment["Monks, there are seven treasures totally. Which seven? It begins with treasure of conviction, along with the next is treasure of virtue, the third is jewel of shame, then treasure of concern, the next is treasure of listening, the sixth being treasure of generosity, the seventh being treasure of discernment].

"And what is the treasure of conviction["And what is being  the treasure of conviction]? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones has conviction, is convinced of the Tathagata's Awakening[There is the example where a disciple among the majestic men and women has conviction, is convinced exactly of the Tathagata's vivication]: 'Indeed, the Blessed One is worthy and rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, an expert with regard to the world, unexcelled as a trainer for those people fit to be tamed, the Teacher of divine & human beings, awakened, blessed.' ['The Blessed One is worthy and rightly self-awakened, indeed superb in knowledge and conduct, well furnished, an expert with regard to the world, unexcelled just as a mentor so as to near those people expedient to be taken care of, the teacher of human beings and any divines. Whoever being awakened, and next blessed with a favor.' ]This is called the treasure of conviction[This is just named the treasure of conviction].

"And what is the treasure of virtue? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones abstains from taking life, abstains from stealing, abstains from illicit sexual conduct, abstains from lying, abstains from taking intoxicants that cause heedlessness. This, monks, is called the treasure of virtue["And what exactly is the treasure of virtue? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones abstains from taking life, abstains from lying, abstains from stealing, abstains from taking intoxicants, abstains from illicit sexual conduct. This is just named the treasure of virtue].

"And what is the treasure of conscience? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones feels shame at [the thought of engaging in] bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct. This is called the treasure of conscience["Next what is the treasure of conscience? There is being the reality where a disciple of the noble ones thinks shame at (the thought of experiencing) mental misconduct, bodily misconduct in conjunction with verbal misdeeds. This exactly is called the treasure of conscience].

"And what is the treasure of concern? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones feels concern for [the suffering that results from] bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct.["And what is being the treasure of concern? There is the reality where an epigone of the noble ones thinks concern for (the suffering that results from) sexual misconduct, mental misconduct in conjunction with verbal misdeeds]. This is called the treasure of concern[This exactly is called the treasure of concern].

"And what is the treasure of listening? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones has heard much, has retained what he/she has heard, has stored what he/she has heard["And what is being the treasure of listening? There is the reality where a disciple of the noble ones has listened greatly, has fixed in the mind what he/she has listened to, has justifiably memorised what he/she has heard]. Whatever teachings are admirable in the beginning, admirable in the middle, admirable in the end, that [Whatever teachings are unexceptionally notable in the beginning, praiseworthy in the middle, admirable in the epilogue, that]— in their meaning and expression — proclaim the holy life that is entirely complete and pure[ — in their expression and connotation — justly proclaim the sacred life that is without exception pure and complete]: those he/she has listened to often, retained, discussed, accumulated, examined with his/her mind, and well-penetrated in terms of his/her views. This is called the treasure of listening[those he/she has listened to habitually, retained, talked through, accumulated steadily, examined with his/her mind, besides, with well-penetrated regarding his/her exact situations. This is just named the treasure of listening].

"And what is the treasure of generosity? There is the case of a disciple of the noble ones, his awareness cleansed of the stain of stinginess, living at home, freely generous, openhanded, delighting in being magnanimous, responsive to requests, delighting in the distribution of alms. This is called the treasure of generosity["And what exactly is the treasure of generosity? There is being the reality of a disciple of the noble ones, his awareness expurgated the toxic waste of stinginess, enjoying at home, easily generous, exceptionally openhanded, delighting in being kindly, efficient to beseechings, intoxicating in the distribution of alms. This is just named the treasure of generosity].

"And what is the treasure of discernment? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones is discerning, endowed with discernment of arising & passing away — noble, penetrating, leading to the right ending of stress. This is called the treasure of discernment."["And next what is the treasure of discernment? There is being the reality where a disciple of the noble ones is discerning, extraordinarily endowed with judgment of arising combined with passing away — exalted, penetrating, leading to the equitable ending of any tension. This is being called the treasure of discernment."]

These, monks, are the seven treasures[These, extraordinary monks, just are named the seven treasures].
The treasure of conviction[The expensive treasure of conviction],
the treasure of virtue[combined with the gems of virtue],
the treasure of conscience & concern[the jewellery of conscience & concern],
the treasure of listening, generosity[the valuable treasure of listening, luxuriant generosity],
& discernment as the seventh treasure[jointly and discernment as the seventh treasure].
Whoever, man or woman, has these treasures[Whoever, man or woman, has these inexhaustible and noble treasures]
is said not to be poor, has not lived in vain[is said not to be exceedingly poor, has not lived in vain].
So conviction & virtue, confidence & Dhamma-vision[That being so, exalted virtue and conviction, confidence in conjunction with Dhamma-eyesight]
should be cultivated by the wise[should be cultivated by the exceptional mentor],
remembering the Buddhas' instruction[remembering the Buddhas' every instruction].

"And what is the treasure of conviction? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones has conviction, is convinced of the Tathagata's Awakening: 'Indeed, the Blessed One is worthy and rightly self-awakened, Consummate in knowledge & Conduct, well-gone, an expert with regard to the world, unexcelled as a trainer for those People fit to be tamed, the Teacher of divine & human beings, awakened, blessed.' This is being called the treasure of conviction.
