II. Chapter 5


Now we shall tell of the birth of Hunahpú and Xbalanqué. Here, then, we shall tell about their birth[Nowadays we will recount of the birth of Hunahpú and Xbalanqué together. Here, next, we will tell about their birth].
When the day of their birth arrived, the girl named Xquic gave birth; but the grandmother did not see them when they were born[When the day of their birth arrived, the girl just named as Xquic gave birth; however the grandmother did not see them when they were being born]. Instantly the two boys called Hunahpú and Xbalanqué were born. There in the wood they were born[In the wink of an eye the two boys entitled Hunahpú and Xbalanqué were being born. They were born exclusively among the wood].
Then they came to the house, but they could not sleep[Then they just came to the house, excepting the fact they could not sleep].
"Go throw them out! "said the old woman, "because truly they cry very much." Then they went and put them on an ant-hill. There they slept peacefully. Then they took them from the ant-hill and laid them on thistles["Go throw them out! "said the old woman, "reason being they cry continually." Subsequently they went in addition brought them on an ant-hill. There they slept ralaxedly. Within a short period of time they took them from the ant-hill in conjunction with laid them on thistles].
Now, what Hunbatz and Hunchouén wished was that they [Hunahpú and Xbalanqué] would die there on the ant-hill, or on the thistles. They wished this because of the hatred and envy Hunbatz and Hunchouén felt for them[Now, what Hunbatz and Hunchouén wished was that they [Hunahpú and Xbalanqué] would die in the place on the ant-hill, or on the thistles. They wished this on the basis of the anger and envy Hunbatz in addition Hunchouén felt for them].
At first they refused to receive their younger brothers in the house; they would not recognize them and so they were brought up in the fields[At the beginning they excluded to receive their baby brothers in the house; they would not jolly admit these brothers and exactly since they were all grown up in the fields].
Hunbatz and Hunchouén were great musicians and singers; they had grown up in the midst of trials and want and they had had much trouble, but they became very wise. They were flautists, singers, painters, and carvers; all of this they knew how to do[Hunbatz in addition Hunchouén were great musicians in company with singers; they had been indeed growing up in the midst of experiments and hope and they had had much trouble, but they just became so wise. They were excellent flautists, painters, wood carvers, besides, singers; all of this they in fact knew how to do].
They had heard about their birth and knew also that they were the successors of their parents, those who went to Xibalba and died there[They had heard about their birth and recognized also that they were the next-in-lines of their parents, those who went to Xibalba journey and demised on-scene]. Hunbatz and Hunchouén were diviners, and in their hearts they knew everything concerning the birth of their two younger brothers[Hunbatz and Hunchouén were were excellent diviners (aka soothsayer), besides in their hearts they had knowledge everything about the birth of their twin younger brothers]. Nevertheless, because they were envious, they did not show their wisdom, and their hearts were filled with bad will for them, although Hunahpú and Xbalanqué had not offended them in any way[Excepting, because they were envious, they did not justifiably manifest their wisdom, and their hearts were exactly filled with bad will for them, despite being Hunahpú and Xbalanqué had not offended them anything].
These two [last] did nothing all day long but shoot their blowguns; they were not loved by their grandmother, nor by Hunbatz, nor by Hunchouén[These two at the back did nothing whole day long except shoot their favored blowguns; they were not loved by their judicious grandmother somehow, nor by Hunbatz, nor by Hunchouén]; they were given nothing to eat; only when the meal was ended and Hunbatz and Hunchouén had already eaten, then the younger brothers came to eat[they were given nothing to eat; exclusively at the moment that the comestibles were finished along with Hunbatz and Hunchouén had already ingested, then the younger brothers came to begin to ingest]. But they did not become angry, nor did they become vexed, but suffered silently, because they knew their rank, and they understood everything clearly[But they did not become vexed, nor did they become angry, however were subjected to calm, because they knew exactly their rank, along with they began to take meaning everything clearly]. They brought their birds when they came, and Hunbatz and Hunchouén ate them without giving anything to either of the two, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué[They brought their birds during the time that they came, and Hunbatz and Hunchouén ate them excluding giving anything to either of the two, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué].
The only thing that Hunbatz and Hunchouén did was to play the flute and sing[The thing that Hunbatz and Hunchouén did was to just amuse themselves, to relaxedly sing and also play the flute].
And once when Hunahpú and Xbalanqué came without bringing any bird at all, they went into the house and their grandmother became furious[And once when Hunahpú and Xbalanqué came without bringing any bird in any way, they went into the house and their grandmother was becoming exasperated].
["Why did you take no birds?" she said to Hunahpú and Xbalanqué]"Why did you bring no birds?" she said to Hunahpú and Xbalanqué.
And they answered: "What happened, grandmother, is that our birds were caught in the tree and we could not climb up to get them, dear grandmother[And they rejoined: "Grandmother, as what exactly happened is that our birds were seized among the tree accompanying we could not climb up in time to get them, dear grandmother]. If our elder brothers so wish, let them come with us to bring the birds down," they said[Excepting our mature brothers so enjoy, allow them come with us to bring the birds off the tree," they next said].
["Great," the older brothers rejoined, "we shall go with you early in the day."]"Very well," the older brothers answered, "we shall go with you at dawn."
