易經•彖傳•小過
   
小過，小者過而亨也。過以利貞，與時行也。柔得中，是以小事吉也。剛失位而不中，是以不可大事也。有飛鳥之象焉，有飛鳥遺之音，不宜上宜下，大吉；上逆而下順也。


Tuan Zhuan: Xiao Guo
        
In Xiao Guo (we see) the small (lines) exceeding the others, and (giving the intimation of) progress and attainment. Such 'exceeding, in order to its being advantageous, must be associated with firmness and correctness:' - that is, it must take place (only) according to (the requirements of) the time. The weak (lines) are in the central places, and hence (it is said that what the name denotes) may be done in small affairs, and there will be good fortune. Of the strong (lines one) is not in its proper place, and (the other) is not central, hence it is said that (what the name denotes) 'should not be done in great affairs.' (In the hexagram) we have 'the symbol of a bird on the wing, and of the notes that come down from such a bird, for which it is better to descend than to ascend, thereby leading to great good fortune:' - to ascend is contrary to what is reasonable in the case, while to descend is natural and right.

Tuan Zhuan: Xiao Guo

(In other words)
In the hexagram of Xiao Guo we see first the small (lines) exceeding the others, and giving the instant impression of progress and realisation. Such category of 'exceeding, for the purpose of its being advantageous, shall be consorted with correctness and firmness:' - that is, it must take place only according to the requirements and conditions of the time. The weak (lines) are in the intermediary places, and hence (it is said that what the name features) may be realised luckily in small affairs, and there should be good fortune. Of the wishy-washy lines, two lines above are adjacent the main lines, central axis, and of course the other two below ignored the significant area also, as a result, it is being said that (what the name discloses) 'shall not be duly rounded out in great affairs.'

Spoken of 'exceeding, in order to its being exceeding advantageous, must be further associated with justness and firmness:' - in the sense of, it must bring into existence according to the demands of the time of course. The wishy-washy lines have being around the key positions, and this being so (it is said that what the name reminds of) might be done amid small existing state of affairs, and also there must be good fortune. Of the wishy-washy lines, two lines above are adjacent the main lines, central axis, and of course the other two below ignored the significant area also, by doing this, it is being said that (what the name exhibits) 'shall not be justifiably completed inside the range of big modes.' (Inside the limits of hexagram) we take into consideration 'the emblem of a bird on the wing, and of the recordings that come down out of such category of bird, reason being that it is more excelling to slack off compared to take off (namely, jump), by that means leading to indeed exceptional good fortune:' - therefore, in this case to go upwards is in disagreement with what is befitting, only if to go down is natural and right.
