Mencius answered, 'To raise Qi to the royal dignity would be as easy as it is to turn round the hand.'

'So!' returned the other. 'The perplexity of your disciple is hereby very much increased. There was king Wen, moreover, with all the virtue which belonged to him; and who did not die till he had reached a hundred years - and still his influence had not penetrated throughout the kingdom. It required king Wu and the duke of Zhou to continue his course, before that influence greatly prevailed. Now you say that the royal dignity might be so easily obtained - is king Wen then not a sufficient object for imitation?'

Mencius said, 'How can king Wen be matched? From Tang to Wu Ding there had appeared six or seven worthy and sage sovereigns. The kingdom had been attached to Yin for a long time, and this length of time made a change difficult. Wu Ding had all the princes coming to his court, and possessed the kingdom as if it had been a thing which he moved round in his palm. Then, Zhou was removed from Wu Ding by no great interval of time. There were still remaining some of the ancient families and of the old manners, of the influence also which had emanated from the earlier sovereigns, and of their good government. Moreover, there were the viscount of Wei and his second son, their Royal Highnesses Bi Gan and the viscount of Qi, and Jiao Ge, all men of ability and virtue, who gave their joint assistance to Zhou in his government. In consequence of these things, it took a long time for him to lose the throne. There was not a foot of ground which he did not possess. There was not one of all the people who was not his subject. So it was on his side, and king Wen at his beginning had only a territory of one hundred square li. On all these accounts, it was difficult for him immediately to attain to the royal dignity. The people of Qi have a saying - "A man may have wisdom and discernment, but that is not like embracing the favourable opportunity. A man may have instruments of husbandry, but that is not like waiting for the farming seasons."

Mencius answered, 'To raise Qi to the royal dignity would be as easy as it is to turn round the hand.'[Mencius answered, 'To further raise Qi to the royal dignity would be as easy as it is to turn round the hand.']

'So!' returned the other. 'The perplexity of your disciple is hereby very much increased['This being so!' answered Gong Sun Chou. 'The perplexity and startlement of your disciple hereby is by a great amount added]. There was king Wen, moreover, with all the virtue which belonged to him; and who did not die till he had reached a hundred years - and still his influence had not penetrated throughout the kingdom. It required king Wu and the duke of Zhou to continue his course, before that influence greatly prevailed[There was king Wen, furthermore, with all the justice and blamelessness which of course belonged to him; and who did not die unexpectedly until there are he had gotten to a hundred years - and on top of this his bearing on the enactments had not fathomed wholly from one end to the other of the kingdom. And it then required posterity king Wu along with the duke of Zhou to continue his course, before that influence greatly occasioned and promoted]. Now you say that the royal dignity might be so easily obtained - is king Wen then not a sufficient object for imitation?'[Right off you explain that the royal justness and majesty might be exceedingly easy to obtain - is king Wen accordingly not a fitting object for copying?']

Mencius said, 'How can king Wen be matched?[Mencius then said, 'How may possibly king Wen be compared with?] From Tang to Wu Ding there had appeared six or seven worthy and sage sovereigns[From Tang to Wu Ding there had sprang approximately six or seven observant and competent sovereigns]. The kingdom had been attached to Yin for a long time, and this length of time made a change difficult[The hoped for kingdom had been often attached to Yin Dynasty for a long period, and this interval of time objectionably made a switch exceedingly arduous]. Wu Ding had all the princes coming to his court, and possessed the kingdom as if it had been a thing which he moved round in his palm[Wu Ding had all of the princes coming to his dynasty, and had possession of the kingdom in the same way as it had been a thing which he got arou
nd and moved round in the middle of his palm]. Then, Zhou was removed from Wu Ding by no great interval of time[In the matter of length of period, from posterity King Zhou of Shang to Wu Ding was not a bit of lengthy interval of time]. There were still remaining some of the ancient families and of the old manners, of the influence also which had emanated from the earlier sovereigns, and of their good government[There were to a greater extent remaining a few of the ancient families along with of the old good breeding, of the influence which had anyways emanated out of the preceding sovereigns, and of their unobjectionable measures]. Moreover, there were the viscount of Wei and his second son, their Royal Highnesses Bi Gan and the viscount of Qi, and Jiao Ge, all men of ability and virtue, who gave their joint assistance to Zhou in his government[Furthermore, there were the viscount of Wei (big son of King Di Yi of Shang) and next son of King Di Yi of Shang, their chancellor Bi Gan along with the viscount of Qi, and Jiao Ge, every individual of ability and goodness, who together gave their joint enablement to King Zhou of shang toward his government]. In consequence of these things, it took a long time for him to lose the throne. There was not a foot of ground which he did not possess[Owing to these exceptional matters, it took justifiably many years with the aim of him to lose the glorified throne. There was not a fragment of ground which he did not acquire]. There was not one of all the people who was not his subject. So it was on his side, and king Wen at his beginning had only a territory of one hundred square li[There was not one of all the human beings who was not his subject. Axiomatically it was so favourable to king Zhou, and king Wen at his beginning had only a region of one hundred square li]. On all these accounts, it was difficult for him immediately to attain to the royal dignity[Bearing on all these expositions and also summaries, it was tough for him in a jiff to accumulate to seize the royal dignity]. The people of Qi have a saying - "A man may have wisdom and discernment, but that is not like embracing the favourable opportunity. A man may have instruments of husbandry, but that is not like waiting for the farming seasons."[The residents of Qi kingdom doubtless have a saying - "A human being may have experience and also profundity, but that is not like embracing the timely contingency. A human being may have gears of husbandry, but that is not like waiting for the farming periods."]
