This CD is based on our CentOS 5.1 i386 distribution. We used the tools from the Fedora livecd-tools project to create the CentOS 5.1 live CD image. It can be used as a workstation, with the following software: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, Firefox 1.5.0.12, Thunderbird 1.5.0.12, Pidgin 2.0.2, Scribus 1.3.3.2, XChat 2.6.6, K3b 0.12.17, GIMP 2.2.13. Connie Sieh and Troy Dawson have announced the release of Scientific Linux 5.2, a distribution based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2, but enhanced with extra software and features: "Scientific Linux 5.2 has been released in record time. XFS, the file system, is now officially in Scientific Linux 5.2. XFS is not available during the installation as an option for formatting partitions, but you can install it so that pre-formatted partitions will be recognized. KDEEDU has also been added in Scientific Linux 5.2. This was added mainly because KStars is part of this package, but the other educational programs are also helpful to schools. Alpine has officially replaced Pine in Scientific Linux 5.2. Scientific Linux release 5.2 is based on the rebuilding of RPMs out of SRPMs from Enterprise 5 Server and Client, including update 2. Troy Dawson has announced the release of Scientific Linux 5.1, a Red Hat-based distribution with additional software for scientific and educational purpose: "Scientific Linux 5.1 is finally out. This release has the ability to easily make sites (customized Scientific Linux distributions). The ability to make sites was missing from SL 5.0. We also managed to add back some of those packages that didn't make it into SL 5.0, as well as a few packages new for this release. Scientific Linux release 5.1 is based on the rebuilding of RPMs out of SRPMs from Enterprise 5 Server and Client, including Update 1. It also includes all errata and bugfixes up until January 16, 2008." Some of the extra software added to Scientific Linux include 915resolution, Alpine, CFITSIO, dropit, FUSE, Graphviz, IceWM, Intel wireless firmware, Java, MadWiFi, GStreamer plugins, NdisWrapper, NEdit, NumPy, OpenAFS, R and others. 关于White Box

Distribution Release: White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 2

         
John Morris has announced the release of White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 2, a distribution built from the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4: "White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 2 is now available for download. This covers Update 5 from upstream plus a few errata released since. The recent OpenOffice.org and OpenOffice.org 2 updates are included. The previous policy of skipping every other Update from upstream is being reconsidered in light of the year gap it has caused. Every quarter was a bit often for me to respin, annually seems a mite too far in the other direction." Here is the brief release announcement. The 4-CD set can be downloaded from these FTP/HTTP mirrors, while the DVDs are only available via BitTorrent: manifestdestiny-...-dvd-i386.iso (2,721MB), manifestdestiny-...-dvd-x86_64.iso (2,992MB).                                         

2006-05-02         Distribution Release: White Box Enterprise Linux 4
Respin 1                                
John Morris has announced the release of White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 1, the first update to version 4 of the distribution re-built from source RPM packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux: "White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 1 is now available via both BitTorrent and FTP/HTTP. As with the original release, both i386 and x86_64 platforms are supported. This release catches up all errata through April 28. Other than errata, the only significant change is the start of renaming Firefox to IceWeasel. This is in response to a conversation last year with the legal contact at the Mozilla Foundation." 2005-05-07         Distribution Release: White Box Enterprise Linux 4
         
White Box is the latest project to release a Linux distribution rebuilt from source RPM packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4: "Yes it has been delayed a few weeks longer than planned, but this baby is finally born! White Box Enterprise Linux 4 is now moving to the mirrors. The i386 ISO images are widely distributed as I type and the x86_64 and source images should appear within 24 hours. ... This release is starting out with i386 and AMD64 ports built from the exact same source package set, which is RHEL4 updated with all errata released through April 30. The kernel is an exception to the WB naming convention." Find a lot more details in the release announcement. A developement preview of White Box Enterprise Linux (WBEL) 4 has been released: "A preview of WBEL4 is currently available via BitTorrent. It is believed to be feature complete except for the inclusion of the yum configuration info to allow updating. Since there isn't yet a download tree for 4 on the mirrors this isn't really an issue for testing yet. This release is i386 only because the x86_64 building has only just begun. There are a few small details left: as an RC, I didn't bother to GPG sign anything; the artwork is trademark clean but lame in several places, this is being worked on...." The developers of White Box Enterprise Linux have released an updated set of ISO images which include all the erratas and security patches released to-date by Red Hat: "White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 Respin 2 is now available. This release is purely a maintenance release to pick up the accumulated errata since Respin 1 in June 2004. It includes all errata issued from upstream through the end of February 2005, with the exception of the kernel. The kernel is the older one issued with Red Hat, Inc.'s Update 4 so that binary driver discs made available by 3rd party hardware vendors should be compatible with this rebuild release." White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 Respin 1 is now available via BitTorrent or FTP. "New and improved features include all errata released by Red Hat through May 31, 2004, and x86_64 moves from an outside contributed port to an officially supported platform on an equal footing with i386. This update release provides various enhancements for virtualization, encryption, cluster storage, but also desktop improvements. The Xen hypervisor makes the running of multiple virtualized server instances with its performance improvements and live-migration support for fully virtualized guests more efficient and reliable. Added kernel features include new asynchronous kernel crypto hardware driver APIs which were backported from the upstream kernel. Also new is the OpenSwan package which supports IKE 2 for IPv6.
