(CNN) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a Tibetan villager fatally shot by police during their probe into an alleged theft at a construction site in China's northwest Gansu province state media reported.

国家媒体报道，当局正在调查一藏族村民被击毙的事件。警察在调查中国西北省份甘肃一处建筑工地盗窃案时，该藏族村民被警察致命射杀。

The suspect was killed when a police officer's gun apparently went off during a struggle as the villager reached for the weapon according to the official Xinhua news agency.

根据官方新华社说，搏斗时该村民伸手夺枪，一名警官枪支显然走火，嫌疑人被击毙。

Police the agency reported launched a probe into the apparent theft on January 9 and had followed "traces on the snow-covered ground to the house" where the shooting occurred.

The suspect later died at a nearby hospital it reported. A police officer was also injured during the confrontation.

Rights' groups such as the International Campaign for Tibet say the man -- identified as Gurgo Tsering -- died when the police officer fired the gun through the window of the house during a night raid.

The groups says another Tibetan Gonpo Kyab was also detained during the confrontation.

The incident appears to be the latest in the Tibetan-populated area where tensions between authorities and anti-government protesters have sparked recent demonstrations.

甘肃盗窃嫌疑人争抢警察枪支因走火死亡

甘肃省甘南州夏河县民警近日在调查三名盗窃嫌疑人时遭到抗拒，一名民警被打伤，一名嫌疑人在抢夺民警枪支时因枪支走火受伤，被送往甘南州人民医院抢救无效死亡。

1月9日凌晨，夏河县报警服务中心接到了夏河民用机场施工队报警，称有三人盗窃工地帐篷后乘摩托车逃离。该县阿木去乎派出所迅速派员赶赴案发现场调查，根据雪地痕迹追踪到阿木去乎镇安果行政村下南畔自然村一村民家，在调查嫌疑人时遭到抗拒，在处置过程中发生了伤亡事件。

当天上午10时许，死者家属和部分村民因不了解事故原委冲击阿木去乎镇公安分局和镇政府并实施打砸行为。

司法机关已迅速介入伤亡事件的调查。司法部门负责人表示，伤亡事件的调查取证是一项细致复杂的工作，我们将深入调查，充分取证，力争尽快查明真相，依法严肃公正处理。

经过解释和说明，家属和村民对当地政府采取的处理措施表示认可。目前伤亡事件和打砸行为的调查正在进行中。
